A Rising Star is a five or six year old with a talent for performing and ready for an outlet to express themselves. Our professional teaching staff guide every student to confidence on stage, from children who already make a show out of everything in life to those who need a little extra help and encouragement along the way. Many progress on to Super Stars when they turn seven, through to our older classes and beyond, and are regularly invited to perform in Sing'theatre community outreach projects such as Music Fest and Singathon.
At Sing’theatre Academy the academic year is split into two semesters: Semester 1 (14 weeks, Sep to Dec) and Semester 2 (20 weeks, Jan to Jun).
In Semester 1, the Showcase Semester, students develop their triple threat skills in singing, dancing and acting, which they put to use in the end-of-semester public showcase. In Semester 2, the Show Semester, students work over 20 weeks to stage a full-scale musical with set, props and costumes.
This semester: Movie Musicals Magic
What happens when the magic of musical theatre meets the big screen? Students explore songs, scenes and characters inspired by beloved musical films, taking their cue from favourites such as Frozen, The Lion King, Mary Poppins and Matilda. Material is chosen to suit each group’s age, interests and abilities.
What happens in Semester 1
Developing the skills to sing, dance and act matters, and we dedicate time to building technique and confidence in all three so students can put them into practice when they perform.
Weekly lesson plans
Material varies week to week. One week explores singing harmonies, the next group choreography, the next vocal projection and acting, all through the lens of fun songs and scenes from popular musicals.
Goals for Semester 1
To strengthen skills in singing, dance and acting, so students are better equipped for Semester 2 when they present a full-scale musical.
End-of-semester showcase
Our Rising Stars gather selected performance items from their classes and take to the stage for friends and family at the end of term.
What happens in Semester 2
Our teachers select scripts and stories that feature students equally and that they care about telling. Previous shows across the Academy include The Wizard of Oz, Alice in Wonderland, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Seussical the Musical.
Weekly lesson plans
Students rehearse scenes and songs each week, with production roles assigned so everyone stays engaged throughout. Skills and techniques suited to each character are woven into rehearsals.
Goal for Semester 2
To turn everything learned into a full musical performance, building teamwork, commitment and stage confidence.
End-of-semester show
Students perform a full-scale musical in our Black Box Theatre with professional set, lighting, sound and costumes, for an audience of friends and family.
